Every January comes with that familiar feeling.

A reset. A deep breath. A quiet (or loud) promise that this year, we’re going to do things a little differently.

We set personal resolutions , to move more, eat better, be more present. Some of us focus on spiritual growth. Others chase professional goals. And if you work in construction, energy, logistics, or infrastructure… chances are you’re also thinking about how to work smarter and safer in the year ahead.

At the same time, Houston is doing exactly that, on a massive scale.

As the city prepares to welcome the world for the FIFA World Cup 2026, we’re watching a transformation unfold in real time. Airports, stadiums, downtown corridors, and entire neighborhoods are being reimagined, not just for soccer, but for the future of Houston itself.

So here’s the real question:

As Houston is making resolutions for the world stage… what resolutions are you making for safety this year?

Houston’s Big Resolution: Build for People

Houston isn’t just upgrading infrastructure, it’s shifting mindset.

The focus is clear: pedestrian access, visitor experience, heat mitigation, mobility, and long-term community impact.

Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening around the city:

⚽ NRG Park – $55M Revamp

To meet FIFA standards and elevate the fan experience:

  • New video boards and seating.

  • Elevator and escalator upgrades.

  • Fabric roof replacement.

  • Field expansion and natural grass installation.

🚶 Downtown Main Street Promenade

Seven blocks are being transformed into a pedestrian-first corridor, featuring:

  • Shade structures and cooling elements.

  • Expanded green space.

  • Improved walkability in Houston’s heat.

✈️ Airport Expansions: IAH & HOU

Houston’s front door is getting a major upgrade:

  • International Central Processor (ICP) expansion at IAH.

  • Terminal, gate, and baggage system improvements.

  • Increased capacity for global travelers.

🏨 Hotel Development

Nearly $100 million invested in new hotels and expansions downtown to support increased tourism and events.

🌱 Community & Legacy Projects

Because the World Cup shouldn’t end with the final whistle:

  • Green Corridor & Columbia Tap Trail enhancements.

  • Grow the Game initiative: renovated soccer fields, youth clinics, and equipment distribution.

  • Public art installations and improved wayfinding across the city.

This isn’t just construction, it’s a commitment to how people move, gather, and experience Houston.

So… What’s Your Safety Resolution?

New Year’s resolutions aren’t just personal — they’re organizational.

As projects scale up, schedules tighten, and complexity increases, safety can’t be an afterthought. It has to be intentional.

Ask yourself (and your team):

  • Are we reacting to incidents — or preventing them?

  • Are safety meetings checking a box — or changing behavior?

  • Are our crews empowered to speak up — or afraid to slow production?

Maybe this is the year you:

  • Invest in stronger safety leadership

  • Refresh training to be more engaging and relevant

  • Improve communication between field and management

  • Reinforce that every life matters, every single day

Because the strongest safety cultures don’t happen by accident.

They’re built.
